The Hong Kong Materials Research Society was found with a great help by Prof. Ian Wilson (CUHK) and Prof. Ming Yu (HKUST). The inaugural meeting was held at CUHK.

Second Meeting
The second meeting was held at CUHK, along with an international symposium on thin films.
2000
International Conference
HKMRS organized the International Conference in Asia 2000, which was a flagship conference under auspicious of Internal Union of Materials Research Society. City U was the conference site and the major organizer (COSDAF). There were 6 symposia.
